The
America Ground takes its name from a small area of land
in Hastings, England.
In the early 1800s a group of settlers had moved on to
the site, claiming immunity from rent, taxes or laws,
because as they saw it, the land had recently been sea
and had no legal owner or jurisdiction.
The local authorities attempted to evict the settlers
and found themselves forcibly thrown out!
The Hastings 'Americans' as they came to be known, flew
the Stars and Stripes in direct defiance of The Crown
and as a sign of empathy with the American 'Americans'
who had gained their own independence within living memory.
